In May, I had the pleasure of opening the new Leighton Beach kiosk, public amenities and public works of art.
The $1.3 million investment by the City of Fremantle replaced the 50 plus-year-old Leighton Beach change rooms and kiosk with a new, fully accessible facility.
The facilities will be widely used, in particular by people with disabilities and swimmers, including students, through school swimming programs.
Leighton is the only beach that has a direct link to a railway station (North Fremantle Station). Currently, access over the railway line involves a 100 metre walk up the platform.
I agree with local residents that access needs to be improved by linking the station directly to the beach, making it a venue accessible to all.
